Biography

Janet Hunter is a Canadian fine artist living in downtown Toronto. Her interest in art began with her studies in archaeology at the University of Toronto. She majored in art history and was able to engage in both academics and a studio practice. As well as literature, languages, philosophy and aesthetics, she explored historical reproductions, printmaking, painting and sculpture. She graduated with a four-year honors degree in Fine Art and went on to receive a Bachelor and Masters of Education. With the exception of a two-year hiatus as a gallery assistant in a Yorkville gallery, she pursued a professional vocation as an art teacher in the Ontario secondary school system. Over her career she taught art history, design, drawing, illustration, material arts and painting.

Throughout her years of teaching she maintained her practice of life drawing and upon retirement she joined the Al Green Sculpture Studio where she has worked for the last decade. Her sculptures are representational and figurative as a result of her lifelong practice of drawing the nude and they are classical in theme because of her academic background. At the Al Green Sculpture Studio she was introduced to winterstone, a cementatious product invented by Lorne Winters, a fellow studio member. It became her medium of choice, followed by bronze.

She shows annually at the Canadian Sculpture Centre and other national venues. She is a Professional Member of The Arts & Letters Club, Toronto.
