Artist Statement

I enjoy the physicality of sculpture, the most primitive desire to just make, build, construct, something beautiful.        ~ Janet Hunter
TUMBLERS was developed from a nude male model who was very flexible and could sit in a crouching position with one arm extended which allowed for the figure to be flipped upside down and sideways so as to suggest an acrobat.
Tumblers, 13"w x 13"d x 12"h, Winterstone
Janet Hunter studied art and archaeology at the University of Toronto where she was classically trained in life drawing, painting and sculpture. She taught fine arts and art history at the secondary school level and in her studio practice pursued figurative sculpture.

Thematically she is interested in the interface of myth and history and how a contemporary object might re-present a classical concept. Her work constitutes a response to a traditional form of figural sculpture and is a contemporary assertion of the continuity that exists in art historical discourse.
